November 2017. I’m sitting with my dad at his house in Kansas.
In 2 days, my sister will arrive with my nieces, aged 3 and 1.
Until then, dad is doing his best to keep me entertained.

“You know,” he says, “we don’t have many toys here for the girls to play with.
We could go in my wood shop and make a couple of toy cars.”

“Okay, but I don’t want to make just a generic car,” I say.
“I want to make an El Camino.”

He pauses. I wait for his usual dad sarcasm.

“El Caminos are cool,” he says thoughtfully, “but have you ever seen a Ford Ranchero?”
